Kellie arranged a White Balance Workshop for us, I was particularly struggling in this area as my settings were using a lot of mixed lighting so this workshop was really helpful. My photographs since have worked a lot better than before.

Below are my notes from the workshop:

Read light

White light - mid day light is the same as flash light

Kelvin is lower in winter cause of the axis, it doesn't reach the top

Cloud cover bring the amber down in winter

Higher the light the shorter the shadow so in winter the shadows are longer

If there is amber lighting inside the blue from outside can balance it

Shooting balance menu

Don't really need fluorescent

Cloudy and shade add in warmth

Can use kalvin custom setting based on number just have to google

Preset manual deals with complex lighting. Using white sheet. Takes a reading of that sample

Take photo of white paper in front of shot

Go in a bit closer to what you're photographing

Go into custom and select the photograph of the paper

D810 - hold down WB until preset flashes. Put in white paper quickly. Take shot. Says good. Now ready to take properly

Got to get the white balance right in the camera not photoshop cause it's tricky to bring the yellow out of a portrait without making them look dead

If photographing in snow use grey card instead of white to allow a neutral exposure

Buy a grey/white card pop ups handy for carrying (we need one)

Below are the photos I took during the workshop:
