Simon Fugiwara: Joanne

During the London Trip in October, I went to the Photographers' Gallery. On the top floor there was an exhibition by Simon Fugiwara about Joanne Salley. Joanne Salley is a model, teacher, artist and champion boxer. Joanne was involved in a scandal because her students discovered some topless photographs of her that she can taken privately. Joanne is still suffering from this knock to her public image. Simon Fugiwara was an ex-student of Joanne's and they have collaborated to create this video and photographic light-box display.

I found this project really fascinating. Partly because of the deep story of Joanne's past but also because of the way she recovered from this part of her and dealt with the struggle of being exposed in this way. The story is truly empowering and the way it has been represented by Simon elevates it to a new level.
