On Friday 25th November, I went to a Year 1 Photography Workshop with Marc Le Galle about how to use portable lighting. Kellie had recommended using Speed lights to help with my portraits of cyclists. I used the speed light the following day to shoot Bath Cycling Club.

Controls on Camera:

Menu > Pencil icon > Bracketing flash > Flash control for built in flash > Command mode > ‘Built in’ should be nothing, Group A and B should be ‘TTL’, Channel should be ‘1’.

Put the built in flash up, as the remote lights will not work without the built in flash on. This is something that you might forget and you will think the lights aren't working but you have just forgotten something small like this.

Put the speed light on a tripod so that I can move the light around as I wish to.

If indoors, shoot the lights at the ceiling as the light will reflect and disperse evenly.

If outdoors, shoot more directed at the subject but not completely direct as this will be too harsh. The idea is that you want to get light on the subject without looking like flash. If it is clear that the flash is used, the lights aren't being used right. Try moving the light further away from the subject. However, you need to do this at the right angle as the lights will not work if they are behind the camera.
